Outlet types and when you need each
Not every outlet is the same. Here is what each type does and where it belongs.
GFCI outlets
Shut off in a split second if current leaks to ground. Used near water: kitchens, baths, garages, outdoors.
Tamper-resistant outlets
Built-in shutters keep kids from pushing objects in. Standard in new work.
USB and USB-C outlets
Charge phones without bulky adapters. Great for kitchens and bedrooms.
Weather-resistant outdoor outlets
Paired with an in-use cover so they stay dry in Utah snow and rain.
AFCI-protected outlets
Help prevent fires from arcing in bedrooms and living areas.
240V outlets
For dryers, ranges and some EV chargers. See Dedicated Circuits and 240V Outlets.

Signs an outlet or switch needs replacing
- Plugs fall out or feel loose. The inside contacts are worn.
- Warm cover plate or a brown mark around the slots.
- Crackling or buzzing when you flip a switch.
- Two-prong outlets that won't take modern plugs.
- A dimmer that hums or flickers with LED bulbs.

Where GFCI protection is usually required
The National Electrical Code requires GFCI protection in many places. When we replace outlets in these spots, we bring them up to today's rules.
| Location | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Kitchen countertops | Water and appliances share the same space. |
| Bathrooms | Hair dryers and sinks are a classic shock risk. |
| Garages and unfinished basements | Concrete floors can be damp and conductive. |
| Outdoors | Rain, snow and sprinklers reach outdoor outlets. |
| Laundry areas | Washers and utility sinks bring water close to power. |
| Near hot tubs | Strict rules apply. See Hot Tub and Spa Wiring. |
Requirements vary with the code edition adopted locally and the scope of work. We confirm on site.

Outlet and switch questions
Why is my outlet warm?
A warm outlet usually has a loose connection or a worn device. Stop using it and have it checked. A hot or brown outlet is urgent.
Can you replace two-prong outlets with three-prong?
Yes, the right way. We add a ground wire where possible, or install GFCI protection and label it as code allows. A three-prong outlet with no ground is unsafe.
Why won't my GFCI reset?
It may be worn out, wired wrong, or still sensing a real ground fault. Unplug everything on it and try again. If it still won't reset, call us.
Can you add an outlet where I don't have one?
Yes. We run a new outlet from a nearby circuit if it has room, or add a new circuit if it doesn't.
Do USB outlets work with all phones?
Most modern USB and USB-C outlets charge all common phones. For fast charging, we use outlets with higher-power USB-C ports.
Why does my dimmer buzz with LED bulbs?
Older dimmers were made for incandescent bulbs. An LED-rated dimmer usually stops the buzz and flicker.
Outlets or switches acting up?
We replace worn devices and add new ones where you need them, usually the same day.
