Guard the TV, the fridge, the furnace board and the car

Whole-Home Surge Protection in Orem, UT, Installed Same Day

Power strips protect a few plugs. A whole-home surge protector mounts at your panel and protects everything wired to it, including the furnace control board, the fridge and your EV charger. Summer lightning and power returning after outages both send surges through Utah Valley homes. Our Orem electricians usually install one in a single short visit, often same day. Emergency at night? An electrician near you answers 24 hours a day.

Lightning storm over a house at night, a common cause of power surges
Lightning is one source. Grid switching and outages are others.

Where surges come from

A surge is a short spike of high voltage. It can last a tiny fraction of a second and still damage electronics.

  • Lightning nearby, not just a direct strike
  • Power coming back after a windstorm outage
  • Utility switching on the grid
  • Inside the home, from big motors like AC units cycling on and off

Small repeated surges wear electronics down over time, even when nothing fails right away.

Whole-home vs plug-in surge protectors

The best protection uses both. They do different jobs.

What a panel surge protector helps protect

Modern homes are full of circuit boards. These are some of the most expensive to replace.

Furnace and AC boards

Control boards are sensitive and often fail after storms.

Kitchen appliances

Fridges, ranges and dishwashers now have electronic controls.

EV chargers

A charger and car are a big investment. See EV Charger Installation.

Smart home devices

Smart switches and thermostats. See Smart Home Wiring.

Quick, clean installation

Most installs are finished in a short visit.

  1. Check the panel

We confirm space and compatibility. Many panels, like Square D and Eaton, have matching devices.

  2. Install the device

Mounted at the panel on its own breaker, wired with short leads.

  3. Check grounding

Surge protection needs a good ground. We verify it and show you the status light.

Whole-home surge protection questions

Do I need a whole house surge protector?

If you have expensive appliances, a furnace with a control board, or an EV charger, a panel surge protector is cheap insurance. The 2020 and newer editions of the National Electrical Code also require surge protection when a home's service is replaced, where those editions are adopted.

Does a whole-home surge protector stop lightning?

No device can stop a direct strike. It greatly reduces damage from nearby strikes and everyday surges.

Do I still need power strips?

Yes, for sensitive electronics like TVs and computers. Use both for layered protection.

How long does a surge protector last?

They wear with each surge. Most have a status light that tells you when it needs replacing.

Can you add one to my existing panel?

Usually yes, if there is space for its breaker. We check your panel first.

How long does installation take?

Most installs take a short visit, often an hour or two.

Protect everything with one device

A panel surge protector guards your whole home. We can usually install it the same day.
