The right breaker for your exact panel

Circuit Breaker Repair and Replacement in Orem, UT, Same Day

A breaker that trips once is doing its job. A breaker that trips every night, buzzes, feels hot or won't reset is telling you something. Our Orem electricians test the breaker and the circuit, then replace it with a listed match for your panel. Most swaps happen the same day. If the panel smells hot, call our 24 hour line instead. For circuit breaker replacement emergencies, we send an electrician near you as fast as we can.

Why breakers trip in the first place

A breaker is a safety switch. It cuts power when something is wrong. There are four common reasons:

  • Overload: too many things running on one circuit, like a space heater and a hair dryer.
  • Short circuit: a hot wire touches a neutral or ground. It usually trips instantly.
  • Ground fault: current leaks to ground, often near water. GFCI breakers catch this.
  • Arc fault: a damaged wire sparks inside a wall. AFCI breakers catch this.

If the cause is still there, a new breaker will just trip again. That is why we test first.

Signs the breaker itself is the problem

Sometimes the breaker is worn out, not the circuit. These clues point to the breaker.

Trips with nothing running

A breaker that trips on an empty circuit is often weak inside.

Won't stay on

It snaps back off the moment you reset it, even with everything unplugged.

Hot to the touch

A breaker should never feel hot. Heat means a bad connection or a failing part.

Buzzing or crackling

A steady buzz from one breaker means arcing at the bus bar.

Scorch marks

Brown or black marks near the breaker or panel cover need attention now.

Very old panel

Old Challenger and Federal Pacific breakers are known to wear out or fail to trip.

Breaker types and where code needs them

Utah follows the National Electrical Code. When we replace a breaker on certain circuits, the code may call for added protection.

Common residential breaker types
TypeWhat it protects againstTypical places
StandardOverloads and shortsGeneral lighting and outlet circuits
GFCIShock from ground faultsHot tubs, some garages, outdoor circuits
AFCIFires from arcing wiresBedrooms, living rooms, hallways
Dual functionBoth shock and arc faultsKitchens and laundry rooms
Double-poleOverloads on 240V loadsDryers, ranges, AC units, EV chargers

Exact rules depend on the code edition Orem has adopted and the work being done. We confirm before we install.

Why the exact match matters

A breaker that fits is not the same as a breaker that belongs. Panels are tested with specific breakers.

Listed for your panel

We use breakers listed for your panel, such as Square D, Eaton or Siemens.

Tight bus connection

A loose fit can arc and burn the bus bar, which may mean a new panel.

Right amp rating

The breaker must match the wire size. A bigger breaker on small wire is a fire risk.

Time to upgrade?

If parts are hard to find or the panel is full, a panel upgrade may cost less over time.

Circuit breaker questions

When does a tripping breaker need to be replaced?

When it trips with no load, feels hot, buzzes or won't stay on. Otherwise the circuit may be overloaded or shorted. Resetting it again and again is unsafe. A test shows which one it is.

Can I replace a breaker myself?

We don't recommend it. The panel has live parts even with the main off, and the wrong breaker can cause a fire. Utah also requires licensed work for most electrical jobs.

How do I reset a tripped breaker?

Find the breaker sitting in the middle. Push it firmly to OFF, then back to ON. If it trips again right away, stop and call us.

How long do breakers last?

Many last decades, but heat, frequent trips and age wear them out. Very old panels may use breakers that are no longer made.

What is an AFCI breaker?

An AFCI breaker shuts off power when it senses arcing, a common cause of wiring fires. Code requires them in many living areas.

Will a bigger breaker stop the tripping?

No, and it is dangerous. The breaker protects the wire. A bigger breaker lets the wire overheat. The fix is a new circuit or lower load.

Breaker giving you trouble?

We will test it, find out why, and install the correct breaker for your panel, often the same day.
