One big appliance, one circuit of its own
Dedicated Circuits and 240V Outlets in Orem, UT, Often Same Day
When the microwave and the toaster trip the same breaker every morning, the problem is sharing. Big appliances need their own circuit. Our Orem electricians add dedicated circuits and 240V outlets for dryers, ranges, freezers, garage tools and more. Many jobs can be done same day. Smell something hot on a shared circuit? Call our 24 hour line. For dedicated circuits and 240v outlets emergencies, we send an electrician near you as fast as we can.
Appliances that usually need their own circuit
Manufacturers and the electrical code both call for dedicated circuits on many large loads. Your appliance manual lists what it needs.
| Appliance or load | Usual voltage | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Electric dryer | 240V | Needs the right outlet type, often a 4-prong NEMA 14-30. |
| Electric or induction range | 240V | Large circuit; check the range's nameplate. |
| Microwave and built-in ovens | 120V or 240V | Over-the-range microwaves often need their own 20A line. |
| Refrigerator and chest freezer | 120V | A dedicated line keeps food safe if another circuit trips. |
| Window or mini-split AC | 120V or 240V | Motors pull extra current at startup. |
| Shop tools, welders, compressors | 120V or 240V | Sized to the tool's amp rating. |
| EV charger | 240V | See EV Charger Installation. |
Always follow the appliance's installation guide. We read the nameplate before choosing wire and breaker size.

Moving or adding a big appliance?
Remodels in Orem often move the laundry upstairs, add a second fridge to the garage, or swap a gas range for induction. Each one changes the wiring you need.
- Gas to electric range: a new 240V circuit, often 40 or 50 amps.
- Laundry move: a 240V dryer circuit and a 20A washer circuit at the new spot.
- Garage fridge or freezer: a dedicated GFCI-protected line.
- Old 3-prong dryer outlet: an upgrade to a safer 4-wire outlet.
No room in the panel? A Subpanel Installation or upgrade may be the answer.
Signs a circuit is overloaded
Overloaded circuits are one of the most common calls we get. Watch for these.
Same breaker trips daily
Usually when two heating or motor loads run together.
Warm cords or plugs
Extension cords and power strips get hot under heavy load.
Lights dim with one appliance
The microwave or vacuum makes nearby lights sag.
Burning smell at an outlet
Stop and call. This can be a fire starting.
How we install a new circuit
Done right, a new circuit is quiet and invisible for decades.
Check the panel
We confirm there is space and capacity for the new load.
Size wire and breaker
Matched to the appliance nameplate and the code.
Clean wire runs
Through attics, basements and walls with as little patching as possible.
The right outlet
The correct NEMA outlet so the plug fits and holds tight.
Protection where required
GFCI or AFCI protection where the code calls for it.
Test under load
We run the appliance and check voltage before we leave.

Dedicated circuit questions
What is a dedicated circuit?
A dedicated circuit is a circuit with its own breaker that serves only one appliance. It keeps big loads from overloading circuits shared with other outlets.
Does my microwave need a dedicated circuit?
Many built-in and over-the-range microwaves do. Check the installation guide. Most call for their own 20-amp circuit.
Can you change my 3-prong dryer outlet to 4-prong?
Yes. Newer dryers use a 4-wire connection with a separate ground, which is safer. We update the outlet and wiring.
How long does it take to add a circuit?
Many single circuits take a few hours. Long runs or finished walls can take longer.
Do I need a permit for a new circuit?
Most new circuits need a permit in Orem. We handle the permit when it is required.
What if my panel is full?
We may use a subpanel or recommend a panel upgrade. We will not squeeze in unsafe breakers.
