When one alarm sounds, they all sound

Smoke and CO Detector Installation in Orem, UT, Same Day Service

Working alarms give your family the minutes they need to get out. Hardwired, interconnected alarms are the strongest setup: when one detects smoke, every alarm in the house sounds. Our Orem electricians install new smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, replace old ones and fix that 3 a.m. chirp. Many swaps are same day. For a smoke and co detector installation emergency, call a local electrician near you who answers 24 hours a day.

Where alarms should go

The International Residential Code, used across Utah, sets the basic rules for smoke alarms in homes.

  • In every bedroom
  • Outside each sleeping area, in the hallway near bedrooms
  • On every level, including the basement

CO alarms belong outside sleeping areas in homes with gas appliances, a fireplace or an attached garage, which describes most Orem homes.

Rules can differ for older homes, remodels and additions. We follow what applies to your project.

Why your alarm keeps chirping

A chirp every minute or so is the most common alarm call. Usual causes:

Low backup battery

Hardwired alarms still have a battery. It needs changing.

End of life

Most alarms are built to last about 10 years, then they chirp to tell you.

Dust or bugs

Debris inside the sensor can cause false chirps or alarms.

Mixed brands

Mixing brands on one interconnect can cause problems. We match units, often Kidde.

Alarm types compared

Different sensors catch different fires. Here is what each does.

Smoke and CO alarm questions

Where do smoke detectors need to be installed?

Under the International Residential Code, smoke alarms go in each bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level, including basements.

Do smoke detectors need to be interconnected?

In new homes and many remodels, yes. When one alarm sounds, they all sound, which gives everyone more warning.

Do I need carbon monoxide detectors?

If your home has gas appliances, a fireplace or an attached garage, CO alarms are strongly recommended and often required.

Why does my hardwired smoke detector chirp?

Most often the backup battery is low or the alarm has reached the end of its life. Dust can also cause chirps.

How often should smoke detectors be replaced?

Most makers say about every 10 years. Check the date printed on the back of the alarm.

Can you replace my old alarms with a different brand?

Yes, but interconnected alarms should be the same brand and compatible. We replace the full set if needed.

Are your alarms really protecting you?

We install, link and test hardwired smoke and CO alarms on every level of your home.
